We have been receiving notification from consumers who have received phone calls that advise they have a state or federal case pending against them and stating that they must respond immediately.  Please be advised that these calls are scams.  If there is a state or federal case pending against you, you will not be notified by a phone call.  We realize that these types of scams are a growing concern, despite the fact that it is becoming more and more difficult to be able to stop the calls as scammers become more and more savvy and use techniques such as spoofing (in which the scammer makes the phone number appear to be coming from a different phone number than it is actually coming from), and other methods to trick consumers who take the calls.  The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) have recently set up a Robocall Strike Force aimed at developing methods to reduce robocalls.  In addition, the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) has also set up a task force designed to develop methods to reduce robocalls and other scam calls and make carriers more responsive to the needs of consumers.  We do not anticipate that this is something that will happen quickly, but our hope is that with time, these groups will be able to find ways to reduce the problems or otherwise minimize the impact on consumers.  In the meantime, we suggest that if you have caller ID and you do not recognize the number that is calling you, you may want to let your answering machine take the call.
